Why won't your PST file shrink after you delete emails?

What are the real PST and OST size limits?

A modern Unicode PST or OST defaults to a 50 GB limit in Outlook 2010 and later. Older Outlook 2003 and 2007 files capped at 20 GB. A legacy ANSI-format file is clamped near 2 GB and gets corruption-prone as it fills, so the format your file uses decides how much room you really have.

If you are on an old ANSI file near 2 GB, the safest move is not to try to fit one more megabyte in. Split it or migrate the mail to a Unicode file, because that 2 GB wall is where corruption tends to strike.

How to reduce your PST file size step by step

Empty Deleted Items and Junk first

Right-click the Deleted Items folder and choose Empty Folder, then do the same for Junk Email. Skipping this is the top reason a compact frees almost nothing. Deleted mail still sits in the file until these folders are emptied.

Find and clear the biggest messages
