MBOX to PST Converter Software: Free Download for Windows 10, 11

How to download and use MBOX to PST Converter Software

1

Add your MBOX files

Open the app and point it at one or more .mbox files. Thunderbird keeps each folder as a separate file inside its Mail folder, usually with no extension at all, so add every folder you want to bring over.

2

Choose one PST or several

Leave the merge option off for one PST per mailbox, or switch on Merge into one PST to combine them. When merging, each source file becomes its own top-level folder, so folders with the same name never collide.

3

Pick where to save

Set a destination on your drive and start. Outlook does not need to be open, or even installed, for this step.

4

Open the PST in Outlook

In Outlook, go to File, Open and Export, Open Outlook Data File, and pick the new .pst. Your folder tree is there, with dates, read state and attachments intact.

What this mbox to pst converter does

A real Outlook PST

SoftOrbits MBOX to PST Converter software writes a valid Unicode .pst, and we tested the output in Outlook 2016. It is a genuine Outlook data file, not a lookalike that barely opens.

Every field kept

Subject lines, HTML and plain-text bodies, From, To and Cc, sent and received dates, the read or unread flag, and file attachments all carry over byte for byte.

One PST or many

The MBOX to PST Converter download takes several .mbox files in one run. It can merge them into a single PST, where each mailbox lands in its own top folder, or write a separate PST per file. A single checkbox decides. When two of those mailboxes overlap, a quick pass to remove duplicate emails from the merged PST tidies the result before you open it in Outlook.

Built for the mbox format

MBOX (RFC 4155) packs every message into one text file, split by From lines. Thunderbird writes the mboxrd style, and the MBOX to PST Converter Software reads that stream to rebuild the separate messages back out of it.

Who it is for

Leaving Thunderbird for Outlook

You have decided Outlook is your mail client now, often as part of a move onto a Windows setup, and you want years of Thunderbird mail carried over instead of starting from empty inbox.

Small teams standardizing on Outlook

A small business folding staff mailboxes into Outlook can hand each person's exported mbox to the tool and get back PST files, ready to attach to profile.

Inheriting old mbox archives

Someone leaves you a stack of mailboxes, some from Eudora, others off an old Unix box running Pine, and you just need them readable in Outlook without finding the original program first.

MBOX files it reads

Plenty of programs write mbox, and they do not all name the file the same way. These are the sources the MBOX to PST Converter Software opens:

Source	File	Comes from	Notes
Thunderbird	no extension	Mozilla Thunderbird	One file per folder in the profile Mail folder
Eudora mailbox	.mbx, mbox	Qualcomm Eudora	Classic desktop client store
Unix / Pine mail	varies	Pine and mutt, classic Unix mail	Plain RFC 4155 mailbox file
Postbox	mbox	Postbox	Thunderbird-derived storage
Apple Mail export	.mbox	macOS Mail, Export Mailbox	The exported folder, not a live account

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I import an MBOX file into Outlook directly?

No. Outlook only imports PST and CSV files, so there is no menu that opens an .mbox. You convert the mbox to a .pst first, then open or import that PST, which is exactly what this MBOX to PST Converter Software is for.

Where does Thunderbird keep my MBOX files?

Inside your Thunderbird profile, in a folder named Mail (and ImapMail for IMAP accounts). Each mail folder is a separate file with no extension, and its subfolders sit in a matching .sbd folder. That missing extension is the reason people often cannot find the file to export.

How do I move my Thunderbird email to Outlook?

Add the mbox files to the converter, decide whether to merge them, save the resulting .pst, and open that file in Outlook. No re-typing folders by hand, and no second client like Eudora in the middle of migration.

What program can open an MBOX file on Windows?

Thunderbird itself and various mbox viewers can read one, but they do not put mail into Outlook. To actually work with those messages in Outlook, you convert the mbox to PST and open it there.

Does the MBOX to PST Converter Software upload my email anywhere?

Short answer: no. Long answer: everything is processed on your own machine. Online converters ask you to upload the entire mailbox to their server first; here nothing leaves your PC, which matters when the mail is personal or work correspondence.

Will the PST work with Outlook 365 and the new Outlook?

The output is a standard Unicode PST, the same data-file format desktop Outlook has used since 2010. We tested it in Outlook 2016, and it opens the same way in desktop Outlook from 2010 through Microsoft 365. The newer web-style Outlook has its own limits on data files, as it does for any PST. None of that involves a password - if a different .PST you own is locked, you can recover a forgotten PST password first.

Can I convert several mbox files in one go?

Yes. Because Thunderbird stores every folder as its own mbox file, a real mailbox is usually several files. Add them all at once, then either merge them into a single PST or keep one PST per file.
