Three repair levels, escalated only on damage

PST Repair Tool for Outlook begins by opening the file as Outlook would. If that works, it stops and reports it. Otherwise, the header is rebuilt in a copy using 7 fields, about 46 bytes. A signature sweep then steps through the whole file in 64-byte increments, verifying every block with CRC32. The expensive pass runs only when needed.

No Outlook required

The app ships with its own PST reader and writer for individual letters, so a computer without Office installed can open the mailbox and pull out the correspondence.

Two checkboxes decide whether attachments and images embedded in messages go into the output.

A report you can forward to support

Every run ends with a written rundown. It names the repair level, what was found, what was written, how many [partial] items there are and, in its own block, what was not recovered. It contains no file names, subjects or addresses because it is meant to be pasted into an email.

Disk space is checked before anything starts

A repair needs room for the working copy and for the output, so it asks for 3 times the input size and measures the smaller of the 2 volumes involved. Better a warning at the start than a dead stop at 90%.

Writing runs on a worker thread. A 10 GB mailbox takes around 17 minutes while the window stays responsive. Press Stop and the unfinished .part file is deleted, so a half-written export cannot pass itself off as a working archive.

No. The source file is opened for reading and never for writing. Everything a repair produces goes into a new file that you name yourself. When the header rebuild needs a working copy, it is made in a session folder and cleaned up on the next start. The built-in Inbox Repair Tool edits the file where it lies and, on a second run, replaces the .bak from the first.

ScanPST was designed for small inconsistencies in a file whose index still works, and Microsoft's own documentation warns that you may have to run it several times. Once the index is gone, it has nothing left to correct. PST Repair Tool for Outlook rebuilds the index by scanning the file for surviving records.

Yes. Nothing in the repair path calls Outlook. The reader, folder browser and PST writer ship inside the app, so a bare Windows machine can open the archive, read the mail and export it.

Load the file and switch the depth from Automatic to Deep scan. Automatic stops as soon as the file opens cleanly. Deep scan reads the file end to end and pulls back deleted records from blocks nobody has reused. How complete they are depends on how much has been written since deletion. Headers survive far more often than bodies.

ScanPST.exe comes with Office and costs nothing, so try it on a copy first. It is frequently enough for a minor inconsistency, but it was not built for a file that has lost its index or for bringing deleted mail back. That is where a dedicated tool starts to matter.

Yes, an .ost goes through the same cascade as a .pst and reaches the same 6 output formats. This version handles one file per run; batch mode and a command line are not part of it.

A folder can survive when the messages it pointed at did not. The folder entry lives in one structure and message bodies in another. Microsoft describes the same effect after ScanPST, with leftovers landing in Lost and Found. The run report spells out the difference between what the tree promised and what was actually written.

Everything except saving. The scan runs in full, the tree shows every recovered folder and message, and messages open for reading. Saving is blocked as a whole, with no limit of 5 items per folder and no demo text replacing the body. What you see in the tree is what a licensed copy writes out.
