Converts IBM and HCL Lotus Notes databases into Outlook PST files. The Notes client does not have to be installed on the machine.
Start the NSF to PST Converter tool and point it at your .nsf or .ntf file. A copy on a network share or a USB disk works the same as one in the Notes data folder.
The folder tree and the message list load straight from the file. Subject, sender and date are in the list, with the size beside them, so you see what the archive actually holds before converting it.
Set a date range or search Subject, From and To. Deleted items can be left behind. Whatever the list shows after filtering is exactly what will be written.
Choose where to save the file and start the conversion. To read the result, open Outlook and use File, Open and Export, Open Outlook Data File.
Every reason below comes out of a forum thread where someone was already stuck with an NSF file and no way into it.
Reads .nsf and .ntf databases in the ODS 41 to 55 range, which covers Notes 5 through the current 14.x line. Both extensions are the same format on disk, so the program opens a template file the same way it opens a mailbox. Reading is done by a separate 64 bit process, which is what lets a multi-gigabyte database open at all.
Deleted and Trash items can be excluded, inline images kept or dropped. Filtering happens inside the reader, not after the export, so the list on screen is what the PST receives.
Files are pulled out of the note, including the ones Domino stored compressed on the server. With server-side compression on, a tool that skips this step hands you a mailbox with no files in it at all. Expanded attachments were checked against their declared size and their own file-type signature on our test corpus before this shipped.
Notes keeps names in own canonical form, like CN=John Smith/O=Acme, which Outlook cannot answer. The real SMTP address is taken from the message headers where it survived, and built from the canonical name where it did not.
Inbox, Sent and Drafts are recognized by their view formulas, and your own folders keep their names. A message that sits in a folder and in All Documents at the same time is written to the PST once, not twice.
An unreadable database gets a reason instead of silence. An ODS version below 41, local Notes encryption, or a file that turned out not to be a Notes database at all. An empty list is never shown as if the mailbox itself were empty.
Moving a department off Notes and onto Outlook or Microsoft 365. Used as a Lotus Notes to Outlook converter it gives one PST per mailbox, handed to the user or attached to the new profile, without standing up a Domino server to read old files.
Client sends a folder of NSF files and no environment to open them in. The tool runs on the workstation you already have, so an archive can be checked and quoted on the same day it arrives.
Legal, audit and forensic work usually starts with a mailbox nobody can open anymore. The PST goes straight into Outlook, where searching and exporting single messages is normal work.
The On-Disk Structure (ODS) number tells you which Notes release wrote the file. It is more reliable than the file date, and it is what decides whether a database can be read.
