Size, type and age filters that stack

Email Attachment Remover removes an attachment only if it matches every enabled filter. 'Larger than 1 MB' is on by default. Enter a list such as pdf, zip, exe in 'Only these file types:' and use 'Only in emails older than:' to keep recent mail untouched. Switch all three off to remove every attachment except inline images.

A note in every email says what was cut

Each affected email gets one line per attachment: 'Attachment removed:' followed by its file name and size. In HTML, the notes appear at the bottom in small grey type under a thin rule. In plain-text emails, they follow a blank line.

Logos and signature pictures stay put

Company logos, signature images and screenshots pasted into replies are embedded in the body with a Content-ID. We tick 'Keep inline images' by default to preserve the message layout. These pictures stay even when they match your filters.

A fallback for files you might miss

Tick 'Save removed attachments to a folder' to keep the removed files next to your copy. The folder uses the mailbox name with -attachments added at the end. This option is off by default.

CSV list of every removed attachment

The report is on by default. Each removed file gets a row with its folder, subject, date, name and size in bytes, plus its path if you saved the files. You can open it in Excel. Cells that look like formulas are neutralized before writing.

Clean copy next to the untouched original

We open your PST or OST read-only and prevent the result from overwriting it. You get a new Unicode PST with -no-attachments added to its name, in your chosen folder. Open the copy in Outlook and check it before deciding when to move the original to an archive drive.

Open the heavy PST or OST

Install Email Attachment Remover and open your PST or OST file.

Set the filters

In the Remove attachments panel, keep 'Larger than 1 MB' or change the number. Add a file type list or an age limit to narrow the selection. Every folder is processed regardless of ticks in the folder tree.

Choose what happens to the cut files

Decide whether removed attachments should be saved to a folder, leave the CSV report on, and pick the target folder in Save to.

Press Start and check the result

The program reports the number of attachments removed, the number of affected emails and the space freed. Open your -no-attachments copy in Outlook through File > Open & Export > Open Outlook Data File.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I strip attachments and still keep the emails?

Your message text, subject, sender and date stay unchanged, and each email stays in its folder. Only attachments matching your filters are removed. A line in the email names each removed attachment.

If I remove an attachment, does the other person lose it too?

No. The program works on a PST or OST file on your PC. Your correspondents keep their copies of the emails and attachments. Nothing is sent to them or changed on the mail server.

Will my PST file get smaller?

The new copy is smaller; the unchanged original keeps its size. Removing attachments inside Outlook often leaves the PST just as big until you compact it. Writing a fresh copy skips that step. The space you save depends on how much of the mailbox was attachments, and the final summary shows the amount freed.
