A .mbox file holds a folder's messages back to back in one long text file. Windows has no program registered for it, so a double click brings up 'How do you want to open this file?' The SoftOrbits MBOX Viewer Tool reads it directly. Your files appear in a tree on the left, messages on the right. Click a message to see it as sent, images and links included.

Where your .mbox came from. Google Takeout gives you one large .mbox file. Thunderbird writes each folder as a file with no extension, named Inbox or Sent, in Mail\\Local Folders or one of the .sbd subfolders beside it. Apple Mail exports the same format in a package that Finder shows as a single item.

Each mailbox gets its own tree node. Open MBOX file... adds several mailboxes at once; Add folder adds a whole profile. Existing nodes stay put. Delete removes one node, Delete all clears the lot.

Your messages at a glance

Pick a node to list that file's messages on the right, with Subject, From, To, Date and Size columns. You read directly from the file, top to bottom, without a separate index.

Preview that keeps the layout

Click a message to view its HTML, including tables, quoted replies and inline images. We use the same renderer for the PDF, so your printout keeps that layout.

Filter instead of scrolling

Filter the open file by From, To, Subject and Body, and narrow it by date range. Type part of a name and apply the filter to find a handful of messages among several thousand.

Add folder walks the whole profile

Point Add folder at a Thunderbird profile to collect every mailbox below it, including .sbd subfolders. The open dialog filters on *.mbox; choose All Files beside it for exports without the expected extension.

Save one message, three ways

Use the File menu to save the open message as EML, PDF or HTML, headers included. Print sends the same rendering to your printer.
