A .mbox file is one long text file holding every message of a folder written back to back, which is why Windows has no program registered for it and a double click only gets you the 'How do you want to open this file?' dialog. Where your .mbox came from. Google Takeout hands you one large file with a .mbox extension on it. Thunderbird is less obvious. It writes each folder as a plain file with no extension at all, named Inbox or Sent, and leaves it in Mail\Local Folders or in one of the .sbd subfolders beside it. Apple Mail wraps its export in a package that Finder shows as a single item. Same format underneath, whichever of the three you have.

Every mailbox you add gets its own node. Open MBOX file... takes several mailboxes at once, Add folder takes a whole profile, and the tree grows instead of swapping. Delete drops one node, Delete all clears the lot.

A message list you can actually scan

Pick a node and the right pane lists what that file holds. The columns are Subject, From, To, Date and Size. No index of its own is built, so what you read is the file itself, top to bottom.

Preview that keeps the layout

Click a message and it renders as HTML. Tables, quoted replies and inline images survive instead of collapsing into a grey slab of text. The same renderer makes the PDF later, so what you see is what gets printed.

Filter instead of scrolling

The filter row covers From, To, Subject and Body inside the open file, and a date range narrows it further. Type part of a name, apply it, and a mailbox with several thousand letters shrinks to the handful you came for.

Not here. The viewer opens the file read-only and has no edit function, which is the behavior you want when the mailbox is evidence or the last surviving backup. A text editor will open it, technically. One stray edit to a From separator line is also enough to glue two messages into one.
