The .msg usually turns up on the one computer that cannot read it.

  • Read the .msg a client sent before you reply, without borrowing a colleague's PC.
  • Old Outlook 2016 emails saved as .msg stay readable after you change mail apps.
  • Messages your cloud storage shows as .msg files open right in your browser.
  • Pull the invoice out of a saved email yourself, no IT ticket needed.

What is an MSG file?

MSG is the format Outlook for Windows uses to save one mailbox item, most often an email. One binary file holds the header, body and every attachment. The body can be plain text, HTML or RTF, sometimes all three. Classic Outlook saves messages as .msg by default with Save As or by dragging them to a folder. These files pile up on shared drives and in help desk tickets. How the format is built inside is covered on our MSG file format page.

Outlook also saves calendar invites and contacts as .msg. This viewer opens them like email, showing the subject and text, but not the meeting time or phone numbers.

EML vs MSG: why you got one and not the other

The EML format is text-based, and nearly every mail app can open it. MSG is binary and was made for Outlook on Windows. Classic Outlook saves messages as MSG; new Outlook saves them as EML. The same email can therefore become different files on two coworkers' computers. The box above takes both EML and MSG files.

Double-clicking the .msg vs dropping it on this page

On a Windows PC with classic Outlook, a double-click is all it takes. Most other places, it is not.

The usual way

Double-click the file

  • With no classic Outlook installed, Windows may ask you to pick an app, and new Outlook, if you have it, often rejects the file.
  • New Outlook refuses a .msg larger than 14 MB.
  • Renaming .msg to .eml does not help. The file stays in Outlook's binary format.

Drop it on this page

The page reads Outlook's binary format without an Outlook profile or a subscription check. It works on a locked-down work laptop where installing programs is blocked.

View attachments and HTML formatting

Full header

This page lists From, To, Cc, Subject and Date above the message. When the file stores a regular email address for the sender or a recipient, that address is what you see. An empty subject shows as (no subject). Bcc is not displayed.

Formatted HTML

An HTML body appears formatted, tables and colors included. Pictures pasted into the email are taken from the file itself, so the logo in a signature shows up without going online. Web fonts never load, so the text falls back to a standard typeface. Links stay clickable and open in a new tab.

Attachments, one click each

Under the message, Attachments (N) lists every file with its size, and pictures used inside the body are marked inline after their size. Download saves a file to your disk. The browser never opens or runs it. An email forwarded as an attachment downloads as its own .msg, ready to drop back into the box.

Plain text when there is no HTML

Some Outlook messages keep their formatting only in RTF and have no HTML copy. The online viewer shows those as plain text in a fixed-width block. The words are all there. Bold and colors are gone. A message with no text copy at all, only RTF, gets a short notice here instead. The desktop MSG Viewer pulls the text out of the RTF in that case, also without the formatting.

Is it safe to open an MSG file online?

Here the browser reads the .msg into memory and parses it in a background worker on your machine. The content is never sent to us. Press F12, open the Network tab and drop in a file to check it yourself. No request carries the email.

The message is shown in a sealed frame. Scripts and forms are removed before display, and remote pictures are held back, so a tracking pixel cannot report that you opened the email. That changes only once you press Show images, and even then only https pictures load.

Convert MSG to PDF, Word or TXT

This page only lets you open an MSG file online and view it. It has no Print button or Save as, and the desktop app does not make PDF files either. To save an MSG file as PDF, use MSG to PDF Converter, a separate Windows program. Word and TXT output is not offered here.

How to open an MSG file on a Mac or Linux

Outlook for Mac often cannot open a .msg, while Linux and Chromebooks have no desktop Outlook. Open this page in an up-to-date web browser, drop in the file and read it with nothing to install. Our desktop MSG Viewer is a Windows program, so this page is our Mac MSG viewer. Phones have not been tested, so we do not promise they work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Short answer: yes, the box at the top of this page is a free online MSG file viewer, no sign-up, and opens it in your browser. Long answer: MSG is Outlook's own format, and most mail apps outside Outlook do not read it. Apart from a viewer like this one, the dependable route is classic Outlook on Windows. New Outlook opens .msg files too, up to 14 MB, although some users see a subscription error instead.

MSG is short for message, nothing more. The format itself belongs to Outlook for Windows, though other programs can read and write it too.

In classic Outlook for Windows, open the message, choose File > Save As and pick Outlook Message Format - Unicode. Dragging a message from the list to the desktop gives you the same kind of file. New Outlook saves messages as .eml, which this page opens as well.

Yes, once it is on your disk. Drag the message from Outlook to your desktop or a folder, then drag that file onto the box. Dropping a message from the Outlook window directly into the browser depends on the browser and has not been tested, so save the file to the desktop first.

Reading it on this page is low risk because nothing in the message can run. Leave Show images alone for an unknown sender, because it tells them the address is live. Treat each attachment with the same care as any other incoming file and scan it before you open it. Links from a stranger are better left alone.

After some updates, new Outlook started showing "This file type requires a Microsoft 365 subscription to open" when people double-clicked a .msg, even though they already had Microsoft 365. In the Microsoft community thread about it, the answer points to classic Outlook as the app for these files, and no fix was confirmed there. Reading the file in a browser skips that check.

No. A .msg is a saved copy, and nothing in it counts down. Older Outlook versions often saved non-Unicode .msg files. If such a file has Cyrillic or Asian text, the browser version may show broken characters. Plain English text reads fine, while curly quotes and the euro sign may still come out wrong. The desktop viewer decodes these files with the code page stored in the message.

Not here. The online viewer takes one file per drop. For a folder, the desktop MSG Viewer adds it with all subfolders and lists every email in it, so you can search by subject or sender before opening one.
