Install the program and pick GoDaddy

Download the GoDaddy Email Backup tool and run the installer on Windows 10 or 11. On the Connect a mailbox screen, open the Email service list, type GoDaddy into the search line and choose GoDaddy Workspace Email. You choose the service yourself because your address uses your own domain, which gives the program no way to identify it.

Enter your GoDaddy email address and mailbox password. The template fills in the server, port and security. Click Test and wait for Server responds, Sign-in and Folders to pass. Click Connect. After 2 consecutive failed sign-ins, the program warns you to stop and recheck: mail servers often block the IP address for up to 24 hours after several bad attempts.

Your GoDaddy folders appear under Folders to back up, each with its email count. Keep Inbox and Sent, untick whatever you do not need and click Next: format.

Under Save as, choose one of 3 formats. Check the path under Save to and the drive's displayed free space, and press Start backup. When the title reads Backup complete, click Open backup folder to see your files.

A GoDaddy email backup is usually needed when a plan is about to end. The company decides to migrate to a new host, or someone left and their seat gets removed. GoDaddy is also retiring Workspace Email, and after the retirement email owners have 7 days to pull their data out. Years of threads with customers sit in those inboxes, and once the plan is over, they can no longer be reached. So back up first and open a few messages from the result for check. Press Cancel after that, not before.

  • Old customer threads stay readable after the GoDaddy plan is gone.
  • The inbox of a departed colleague turns into one archive to file away.
  • With old mail on your disk, you can delete it online when the inbox fills up.

GoDaddy's paid Email Backup add-on is sold with the Email Essentials, Email Plus and Business Professional plans, which are on this side. Its help describes copies kept by GoDaddy and restore back into the account. We did not find a download to your own PC there.

GoDaddy template, no server typing

GoDaddy Email Backup Tool has a ready GoDaddy Workspace Email entry. Choose it and imap.secureserver.net, port 993 and SSL/TLS are filled in as published for Workspace Email. Nothing to look up.

Backup GoDaddy email: folders you choose, tree kept

Each folder in the list shows how many emails it holds, so you see the size of the job before it starts. Spam and Trash start unticked, untick an old newsletter folder too, and the rest is saved to disk in the same folder hierarchy as on the server. There are no filters by date or sender. A folder is the smallest unit you can take.

PST, MBOX or EML

One run writes one format. Export GoDaddy email to PST and you get a single file with every folder inside it. MBOX gives one file per folder that Thunderbird opens. EML saves each email as a separate .eml named by date and subject, attachments included.

Next runs take only new mail

Use the same backup folder again to download only emails that arrived after the previous run. If the connection drops, restart to continue where it stopped. Each archive stays tied to its original server: you cannot continue it from another server or mix two mailboxes in it.

GoDaddy's help lists imap.secureserver.net on port 993 with SSL for incoming Workspace Email and smtpout.secureserver.net on port 465 or 587 for outgoing mail. Backups use only the incoming server. If you already use the mailbox in Outlook, check its account settings to see which server it uses.

A Workspace Email plan listing only a POP3 incoming server has no IMAP. This program needs IMAP to back up your mailbox.

GoDaddy says it backs up the full mailbox and calendar for each user you enable, including contacts and tasks, and restores them into the account. This program saves Workspace Email messages to files on your disk, without calendars or contacts.

No. These mailboxes sign in through Microsoft, and the program does not connect to Microsoft 365 accounts. It works with GoDaddy Workspace Email over IMAP. If you are not sure which one you have, the plan name in your GoDaddy account tells you.

Yes. The program writes the PST file itself, so Outlook does not have to be installed on the PC that makes the backup. You need Outlook only later, to open the file. GoDaddy's own PST guide, written for Microsoft 365 mailboxes, goes through Outlook's Import/Export and warns that with Cached Exchange Mode turned on the export covers only the last 12 months of mail.

Backup GoDaddy email while the account still works. The program opens the mailbox read-only, leaving everything on the server untouched. When the backup finishes, check that the Errors counter reads 0. Otherwise, run the backup again into the same folder. It skips saved emails and downloads only the missing ones.
