Add your bank account and check the MICR line

Download CheckSprint - Check Printing Software and run the setup wizard. On the Bank account step, enter the routing and account numbers from a current check. Open the account screen's Bank & MICR tab and compare the live MICR sample with your check.

Write a check

Open Write Check, pick a payee and enter the amount. The program fills in the words in US style, for example One Thousand Two Hundred Thirty-Four and 56/100. Add memo or stub notes. Click Save and print... to print now, or leave Add to print queue ticked and click Save to print later with others.

Print on blank or pre-printed paper

In Print Checks, under Paper, pick "Blank check stock - print everything, incl. MICR line" or "Pre-printed checks - print fields only". Choose the check's position in the Format list. Print the alignment page on plain paper and hold it against a check sheet. Adjust misaligned fields with Left/right and Up/down and print again.

Import a batch from CSV or Excel

To pay 30 vendor bills in one run, choose Import > Import checks from CSV/XLSX... (or click Import... on the main window) and drop in your file. Match its columns to the check fields, at least payee and amount. The preview marks broken rows and possible duplicates before they reach the print queue.

Features of the check writing software

MICR line in E-13B

CheckSprint - Check Printing Software uses its own E-13B font for the MICR line: 0.117 in high, with a 0.125 in pitch, set 3/16 in from the bottom edge. We lock the clear band below it so no field can overlap. On blank stock, use MICR toner.

Seven paper layouts

Choose a voucher check at the top, middle or bottom with two stubs, 3 per page, 3 per page mailable, 4 per page or wallet size. All use US Letter pages, with layouts sized for common QuickBooks-compatible voucher checks and 3-up stock.

Margins checked first

Some printers can't print close to the edge of the page. Before printing, the program compares your printer's margins with the layout and warns when the MICR line would be cut off. Then it offers to put the check in the top or middle position. Scale is fixed at 100%.

Payroll check stubs

Voucher stubs show gross pay, deductions, net pay and year-to-date totals from your payroll service's CSV export. Built-in profiles follow the published Gusto, ADP and QuickBooks Payroll export formats. If your columns differ, map them by hand. The program prints the numbers it gets and does not work out taxes.

Prints from QuickBooks Desktop

Setup adds the CheckSprint Check Printer virtual printer (Windows asks for administrator permission once). Print checks to it from QuickBooks Desktop, Sage 50 or another program, and CheckSprint adds your bank's numbers and MICR line. Switch on Read fields to copy payee, amount and date from QuickBooks Desktop and Sage 50 vouchers into the register. If your program has no printer step, drop a PDF on the CheckSprint window.

The register records every check, plus deposits and debits. Filter by status, such as To print or Void, and mark checks cleared as your statement arrives. Running and cleared balances appear at the top. Export the whole register to CSV.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I print my own checks at home, and is it legal?

Yes, for your own accounts. US checks needn't come from the bank's printer. Your bank needs a readable, signed check. Some banks have their own rules for office-printed checks, so ask yours before the first payroll.

Do I need MICR toner to print checks?

On blank check stock, we recommend it. Much of check clearing uses images, but some banks still read the bottom MICR line magnetically. Regular toner can mean rejection or manual entry, sometimes for a fee. A MICR cartridge for HP 58A printers is one example. Your bank's pre-printed checks already have the MICR line, so any toner works.

Will my bank accept a check printed on blank paper, also through mobile deposit?

Usually, with real check stock, a laser printer with MICR toner and a routing number matching your account. We have not run checks through US banks ourselves yet. Test your first checks: deposit one at your bank or through its app and wait until it clears before printing a full run.

Can I print checks from QuickBooks on blank check stock?

From QuickBooks Desktop, yes. From QuickBooks Online, through a PDF. QuickBooks alone does not print the MICR line on blank stock. Intuit's own help says QuickBooks Online does not print on blank check stock. Print from QuickBooks Desktop to CheckSprint Check Printer to add the MICR line and bank details. In QuickBooks Online, save checks as PDF and open the file in CheckSprint. This version has no direct QuickBooks Online connection.

Can I print payroll checks with this software?

Yes, on voucher checks with a pay stub. Your payroll service or accountant supplies taxes and deductions; you import their export file and print. For manual payroll, enter net amounts in a CSV or Excel sheet and import it.

Can I use my own printer, or do I need a special one?

A regular laser printer is enough for most people. Our Brother office laser printed test checks without cutting anything off. We advise against inkjet: the ink can smear, and some store scanners fail to read inkjet checks at checkout.

Is there free check printing software?

CheckSprint is free to download and try for as long as you like, with no cap on checks. Printed checks carry a watermark. The table above shows what the license key changes.

Does CheckSprint run on a Mac?

No. It is a Windows program for Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit. The installer includes everything it needs, so there is no separate .NET download.

How do I avoid duplicate check numbers?

Each account numbers checks consecutively and never reuses a number. A voided check keeps its number with a Void mark. Reprinting requires a reason, recorded in the print log.

Where are my bank details stored?

In one database file on your PC, encrypted with AES-256-GCM. If you set a password, PBKDF2 derives the key from it with 600,000 iterations. Otherwise, Windows protects the file for your user account. Nothing goes to a cloud. If you forget the password, nobody can open the file, including our support. Automatic backups use the same key. Write the password down.
