Convert Apple Mail to PST for Outlook

Convert native macOS Mail, both .mbox packages and .emlx messages, into a single Outlook PST on your Windows PC. No Mac and no second mail app needed.

Apple Mail cannot make a PST, and Outlook will not open the .mbox or .emlx files the Mac leaves behind. So the mail you copied off your Mac just sits there, unreadable in your new client. This Windows software reads those native Mail files and writes a standard Outlook .PST you can open right away, with no Mac still running in the corner.

How to convert Apple Mail to PST

Copy your mail off the Mac.

1. Copy your mail off the Mac

1. Copy your mail off the Mac

On the Mac, grab the .mbox package folders from the Mail library, or use Mail's Export Mailbox to save them to the desktop. Move the files to the Windows PC on a drive or a USB stick. Loose .emlx messages work too.

Add the .mbox or .emlx files.

2. Add the .mbox or .emlx files

2. Add the .mbox or .emlx files

Open the app on Windows and point it at what you copied. It takes whole exported mailboxes and individual .emlx messages, so add every folder you want to bring across in one go.

Choose one PST or several.

3. Choose one PST or several

3. Choose one PST or several

Leave the merge option off for one PST per mailbox, or switch on Merge into one PST to combine them. When merging, each source becomes its own top-level folder, so two folders with the same name never collide. Then pick where to save on your drive.

Open the PST in Outlook.

4. Open the PST in Outlook

4. Open the PST in Outlook

In Outlook, go to File, Open and Export, Open Outlook Data File, and pick the new .pst. Your Mac folder tree is there, with dates, read state and attachments intact. Outlook does not need to be open, or even installed, while the app converts.

Why move your Mac mail this way

Bring the whole mailbox to the new PC, not the parts that survive.

Bring the whole mailbox to the new PC, not the parts that survive

Platform switches go wrong when half the mail arrives and the rest is stranded on a Mac you no longer use. This tool is built so that does not happen.

  • Your original Mac files stay untouched. The tool only writes a new PST and never changes the copies you brought over, so nothing is at stake if you run it twice.
  • Files never leave your PC. The conversion runs offline, with no upload to a stranger's server.
  • No Mac is needed at conversion time. The software runs on Windows straight from the copied files.
  • Moving your mail is a planned job on your own schedule, not a scramble before the old Mac gets wiped.

What this apple mail to pst converter does

A real Outlook PST

SoftOrbits Apple Mail to PST Converter writes a valid Unicode .pst, and we tested the output in Outlook 2016. It is a genuine Outlook data file in the modern Unicode format desktop Outlook reads, so it opens cleanly instead of throwing repair errors.

Every field kept

Subject lines, including non-Latin scripts, HTML and plain-text bodies, From, To and Cc, sent and received dates, the read or unread flag, and file attachments all carry over intact.

Reads .emlx and .mbox

Native Mail keeps each message as an .emlx file inside .mbox package folders. The converter unwraps the Apple length prefix and the trailing plist to recover clean RFC 822 mail, and it also reads the .mbox (RFC 4155) that Export Mailbox writes. One run takes many files at once.

Not Outlook for Mac

This reads the Mac's built-in Mail app. Outlook for Mac is a different program that saves .olm, a separate format that a dedicated OLM to PST converter handles. Knowing which one your mail sits in saves you a wasted download.

Switching from a Mac to a Windows PC

You are moving off the Mac and want years of Apple Mail waiting in Outlook on the new machine, not left behind on hardware you are about to trade in or hand back.

IT setting up a departing employee's mailbox

Someone hands you a Mac, or just its Mail folder, and needs those messages in Outlook on a Windows profile, without keeping a spare Mac around to run a Mac-only tool.

Consolidating old Apple Mail archives

You have .mbox exports and loose .emlx files saved off past Macs, and you just want them readable in Outlook in one place instead of scattered on old drives.

🙋 Frequently Asked Questions

No. Apple Mail cannot open or save a PST, because PST is an Outlook-only container. Mail stores its messages as .emlx and .mbox instead. You convert those Apple files to a .pst first, then open that PST in Outlook, which is exactly what this converter is for.

Copy the .mbox packages or .emlx files off the Mac, add them to the converter on Windows, decide whether to merge, save the resulting .pst, and open it in Outlook. No IMAP round-trip, and no detour through a second mail client to get there.

Native Mail stores them under your macOS Library, in a Mail folder, as .emlx files inside .mbox package folders. You can copy that folder as is, or use Mail's Export Mailbox to save tidy .mbox folders to the desktop, then move either one to the PC.

Outlook only imports PST and CSV, so its menu has no option for a .mbox at all, no matter that Apple Mail wrote it. The exported .mbox is a fine source; you just convert it to a .pst first, then open that PST in Outlook.

No, and the difference matters here. Apple Mail is the Mac's built-in app and stores .emlx and .mbox, which this tool reads. Outlook for Mac is a separate Microsoft program that exports .olm, a different format that an OLM to PST converter handles. Pick the tool that matches where your mail actually lives.

No, it does not. Everything is processed on your own machine. Online converters ask you to upload the entire mailbox to their server first; here nothing leaves your PC, which matters when the mail is personal or work correspondence.

No. The converter runs on Windows and only needs the files copied off the Mac, so it still works after the Mac is traded in or wiped. Many Mac-only tools cannot help at that point, because they need macOS running to do anything at all.
