A video stores sound separately from the picture, sometimes with several audio streams, such as the original language and a second language. The SoftOrbits Extract Audio from Video tool saves the sound to a new file and drops the picture. Its built-in ffmpeg engine needs no codec pack or plug-in.

Online audio extractor or an app to extract MP3 from video?

A browser tool suits one short video. For dozens of videos or files weighing gigabytes, use a desktop program to extract audio from video.

A quick single job

Upload to a website

Fine for one small video on a fast connection.

  • Each video goes to someone else's server first
  • Waiting time grows with your upload speed
  • Free tiers may cap what you can send
VS
Dozens of big recordings

Extract on your own PC

The files never leave the computer, and there is no queue.

  • Work starts at once, with no upload step
  • Speed depends on your processor, not your internet connection
  • Bitrate and channel count are yours to set

Extract the audio track you need

An MKV movie rip or an OBS screen recording can hold two to six audio tracks inside one video. Some video editors import only the first, leaving streamers writing scripts to save each track separately.

The program lists each file's tracks under Audio Track. Choose the commentary or second language, or switch off that file's sound. Need another track too? Run the same video again with that track selected.

  • Two languages in a movie rip: keep the one you want to listen to.
  • Game recording with the mic on its own track: save your voice without the game.
  • Interview with a lapel mic on track 2: export just that track as WAV.

Why not do it by hand, video by video?.

Why not do it by hand, video by video?

With fifty or three hundred videos, repeating settings for every file gets old. You may even end up with music files that still contain the picture. Extract Audio from Video Software processes the whole batch and saves audio only.

  • An hour of sound at 320 kbps takes about 144 MB.
  • Results contain sound only, so a phone or a car stereo plays them.
  • No scripts or command lines to learn for a big batch.
  • The source video stays untouched, so a wrong setting costs only a re-run.

Whole folders in one pass

Add Folder loads every video in a directory. Click Convert once to process the list. The program accepts 73 video extensions, including MP4, MKV, camcorder MTS files and old VOB discs.

320 kbps when size counts

MP3 and the other main lossy formats have three presets: 320 kbps, 192 kbps and 96 kbps. To convert existing audio files, such as WAV to MP3, use our MP3 converter for Windows.

Lossless when quality counts

Extract Audio from Video Software writes five lossless formats, including WAV and FLAC. For editing, skip MP3: another lossy pass over the video's compressed sound loses detail you cannot recover.

Cut a fragment or split

Set a start point and duration to save a fragment, such as one song from a concert video. Fast Split divides a long recording into a set number of parts or pieces of a set length.

Fix quiet or noisy sound

Normalize evens out loud and quiet passages. Volume raises an entire quiet track. Noise reduction has its own level for hiss and hum; all three run in the same conversion pass.

Merge clips into one track

With two or more files listed, turn on Merge into one file to save a single audio file, such as a lecture recorded as four camera clips. Use the built-in player to listen before and after.

Podcasters and video editors

Before editing, pull a WAV from each camera clip and line it up with audio from a separate recorder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Audio extraction, also called detaching audio from a video, saves the soundtrack as a separate MP3 or WAV file, without the picture. To convert the video itself to another format, use a video file converter.

Install Extract Audio from Video Software, choose an audio format on the Audio tab and press Convert.

Yes. VLC's Convert/Save dialog saves audio from video, with few conversion settings, no editing and some setup for batches. Choose an audio-only profile, or your output can still contain the video stream.

Yes. Audacity needs the separate FFmpeg library to open video files and import their sound for editing. It works on one project at a time; large batches need extra setup.

VLC, Audacity with FFmpeg and the ffmpeg command line are free. For example, run ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vn output.mp3. Free online extractors upload your file first. Our free trial saves only the first 30 seconds of each file.

Choose a lossless format. Most videos already contain compressed sound, often AAC. WAV or FLAC preserves it in a larger file. MP3 at 320 kbps adds another lossy step for a much smaller file.

Add a folder or select several files, choose one output format and press Convert once. Each video becomes a separate audio file in your output folder.

The trial opens your files and lets you choose the format and track. Every output ends at 0:30.

73 video extensions, including MP4, MKV, AVI, MOV, WMV, WebM, FLV, TS, MTS, M2TS, VOB, MXF, 3GP and M4V.
