Add your PDF files

Install the PDF Metadata Remover tool. Click Add files or Add folder (Include subfolders is on by default), or use drag and drop to bring PDFs into the window.

See what each file exposes

Scanning starts right away. The Exposes column labels every file, while Found lists what turned up, such as Author and 3 revisions. Click a file to see each field under Now and After in What this file tells the recipient.

Pick a preset and your field values

Before sending to a client is the default preset. Metadata only leaves photos and comment authors alone. Court filing and tenders also removes comments, attachments and JavaScript. Under Your field values, click Edit... to set each field to Remove, Keep or Set to, then click Save template.

Choose where to save and run

Keep Save copies to, which suggests a Clean folder next to your files, or switch to Replace originals. With Replace originals, the originals move to the Recycle Bin after a good save. Click Remove metadata. If a file needs a password or carries a signature, the program asks first. The Done window marks cleaned files Verified and offers Open folder and Open report.

How it deletes PDF metadata and proves it

Risk shown before cleaning

Each file gets a risk label. Name + software means a person's name turned up. Software only means program traces. The other labels are Signed, Password and Clean. The side panel doubles as a PDF metadata viewer, listing every field with its current value and what happens to it after.

Info and XMP in one pass

A PDF keeps Author, Title and the other fields twice, in document properties and an XMP packet. To strip metadata from a PDF, the program clears both and removes XMP from every object in the file. Custom property keys go too. PDF/A files keep a small XMP block that marks them as PDF/A.

Earlier versions are gone

A lot of software saves PDF incrementally, leaving old values under the new ones. The panel shows them, for example Earlier versions: 4 saves, author M. Keller. Each file is written fresh, so those saves do not come back. The document ID is replaced too, except on files with older encryption, where the key depends on it.

Photo data stripped, photos untouched

JPEG images inside the PDF lose their EXIF and GPS tags and any other marker blocks with metadata. The compressed image data and the color profile stay byte for byte. Nothing is re-encoded, so pages look the same.

Your own field values

A template sets each field to Remove, Keep or Set to, with {file name} and {date} inserts. Author can carry your company name on every file. The default Company template puts the file name in Title and removes the other fields.

Checked after saving

After saving, PDF Metadata Remover opens each file again and searches every decoded string and decompressed stream for the old values in UTF-8, UTF-16 and hex. A CSV report with SHA-256 hashes before and after goes to your profile folder, not next to the files. It has 18 columns and no field values, so the report itself cannot leak what you removed.

How to remove metadata from a PDF manually?

In Adobe Acrobat, open File > Properties, clear the fields on the Description tab, save, then check Additional Metadata for the XMP copy. That guide covers one file, while a plain Save keeps earlier versions inside it. Sanitize Document removes more in one go, but Adobe support confirms it drops bookmarks. On one scanned book, Remove Hidden Information grew the file from 19 MB to 53 MB. Our program cleans a folder in one run.

How do I view all metadata of a PDF?

File > Properties in a PDF reader shows basic information only. XMP, earlier versions and photo GPS stay out of sight. Add the file to our trial: the panel lists every field it found with the current value, free and without saving anything.

How can I check if a PDF file has been edited?

Look at the modification date (Modified) and the Producer field, then count the saves. Each incremental save adds a section at the end of the file, and our panel shows them as Earlier versions with the number of saves. Removing metadata clears these traces. It does not hide a change in the visible text, and a signed file loses its signature if you process it anyway.

Can it work as a PDF metadata editor, not just delete the fields?

Yes. In Your field values every field gets Remove, Keep or Set to. Put your company name in Author and Creator, {file name} in Title and {date} in Created. It works as a simple PDF metadata editor for the whole list, and the values are written into XMP as well, so every reader shows one consistent author. Page content is not edited.

Why should I remove metadata from a PDF?

A junior's name in Author, a Producer that names your internal software, GPS in a site photo and an earlier version with first-draft figures can all be opened in two clicks by anybody who knows where to look. Clean files before they go to a client, a court or a public website.

Why does the author name come back after I cleared the properties?

A second copy can sit in XMP. Some readers, including Adobe Acrobat, show the XMP author when the document properties field is empty, so the name returns in another program. To remove the author from a PDF, clear both places. Our program takes XMP off every object in the file and writes Set to values into both.

Can deleted metadata be recovered from a PDF?

From an incremental save, yes. Some tools write the change as an update at the end of the file, and the old values stay earlier in the file. ExifTool's own documentation says old information is never actually deleted from the file. PDF Metadata Remover writes the whole file again, so earlier versions inside it are gone and cannot be recovered.

Is it safe to upload a confidential PDF to an online metadata remover?

For confidential files we would not. If you remove metadata from a PDF online, you hand the file to a server you can't inspect, run by people you don't know, and the whole point was to share less. Our program works offline and files never leave this computer. You need the internet only to buy and enter a key.

How do I know the metadata was really removed?

The Properties box cannot verify the result. In one forum thread, old values kept showing after Remove All until the window was reopened. Our program opens each saved file again and searches it for every original value. The Done window says Verified per file, and the CSV report keeps SHA-256 hashes before and after.

Is removing metadata the same as redaction?

No. Redaction blacks out text or images on the page. Metadata removal clears the data stored around the pages, the properties and XMP among them. A name printed in the document itself stays where it is, and for that you need a redaction tool.
