Photo Forensics - AI Image Detector & EXIF Viewer checks whether a photo was edited or AI-generated by reading its metadata, compression and pixels on your Windows PC, then puts what it finds into a PDF report.

Every AI detector misses some fakes and flags some real photos. SoftOrbits Photo Forensics lists editing signs and their strength in a PDF report you can attach to a claim or case file. It reads EXIF and XMP fields and the camera's preview, then tests JPEG compression, error level analysis and AI generation.

A web check or a case record

A free web fake photo checker gives you an answer about one file. For a claim, dispute or hiring decision, you also need a record of how you got it.

The usual way

Upload a photo, get a yes or no

Free online photo forensics tools and the file Properties window each give you part of the evidence.

  • Windows lists the camera model and a timestamp, but nothing about pixels
  • A single verdict from a model nobody explains
  • A screenshot of the result is all you keep for the file
VS
Photo Forensics

Same tests on every file, on record

We run the same tests on every photo and log every action in a case.

  • Each result names the test that produced it
  • Run the same file again and get the same result
  • A file you can attach

How to download and use Photo Forensics - AI Image Detector & EXIF Viewer

Open a photo, a folder or a PDF.
1

Open a photo, a folder or a PDF

Download and install Photo Forensics - AI Image Detector & EXIF Viewer. Drop a file on the Start screen or click Open photo..., Open folder... or Import from PDF.... A photo opens a quick check; a folder opens the batch table. For a claim, click Create case and enter the case number, reviewer, event date and place.

Read the summary.
2

Read the summary

The program computes the SHA-256 hash first and opens the file read-only. The summary lists File status (such as a camera original, messenger copy or screenshot), Review priority, each method and the AI-generation signs scale marked Weak, Moderate and Strong.

Look at the maps and the metadata.
3

Look at the maps and the metadata

On the Layers tab, overlay the ELA or Noise map, drag the Curtain, zoom up to 8:1 or inspect a detail with the Magnifier. The Metadata tab lists every field; search or tick Only fields with signals.

Save the PDF report.
4

Save the PDF report

Open Report preview, tick what to include and click Save PDF or Print.

Need more than a gut feeling about a photo?

Photo Forensics - AI Image Detector & EXIF Viewer shows what looks off and what to ask for next. The verdict is yours.

  • A Low, Medium or High review priority instead of a fake-or-real percentage
  • A plain note on which original file to request from the claimant
  • A photo reused from an earlier claim is flagged, even resized or cropped
  • Your report's recipient can run Verify report... to check it is unchanged

Photo forensics software: what it checks

EXIF viewer that reads more than EXIF

Photo Forensics - AI Image Detector & EXIF Viewer reads EXIF, XMP, IPTC and ICC data, maker notes, PNG text and 8x8 quantization tables. Eleven rules flag signals such as an editor in the Software field or a save date after capture. They include checks for image generator traces and XMP editing history.

Error level analysis and noise maps

ELA re-saves the frame to reveal zones that compress differently. The Noise map finds patches with different grain. Copy-move outlines cloned areas. Compare maps with the photo in Overlay, Side by side or Curtain view.

JPEG traces that show a re-save

Compression tables often reveal what last saved a JPEG, such as libjpeg with an estimated quality or Adobe Photoshop. The program also detects Telegram-style recompression, the Facebook marker and double compression. These methods work on JPEG files only. Comparing the embedded camera preview with the frame reveals crops or rotations.

AI image detector: coverage and scores

AI image detection uses your processor without a graphics card. You get a scale from None to Very strong. We keep the raw score in Details because it is not a probability. The detector checks the frame's central square, leaving a wide shot's edges unchecked.

A case for each claim

Group the files of one claim under a case number and add the reviewer's name. Your organization and logo can go into the report. Enter the event date and place, and Photo Forensics marks frames taken before the event or farther away than the distance you set, from 0.05 to 1000 km. A timeline puts every capture date on one line.

PDF report with hashes and a custody log

The report lists each file's SHA-256 and MD5, image forensics methods with versions and settings, and observations with their limits. We always include Limits of the methods. Case reports include the chain of custody log, where each entry contains the previous entry's hash to expose later edits.

When a photo needs a second look

A car hood with hail dents photographed in a parking lot.

Hail damage on a car hood

The claim blames Tuesday's storm, but one shot dates from Sunday. Zoom in on the dent and compare it with the surrounding paint.

A phone with a chat thread and a forwarded photo whose EXIF data was stripped.

The photo came through a messenger

The camera data is gone and the file was recompressed on the way. The file status points to a messenger, and the summary tells you to ask for the original from the phone.

A printed claim form with photos clipped to it.

Damage pictures packed in a PDF

Import from PDF extracts each image byte for byte. A JPEG stays a .JPG with no re-compression.

A laptop showing a grid of portfolio images checked for edited photos.

A portfolio that looks too clean

Run a design applicant's folder of twenty images as a batch, filter With inconsistencies and ask about those files at the interview.

Who needs Photo Forensics - AI Image Detector & EXIF Viewer

Insurance adjusters

Sort dozens of weekly claim photos for review when there are too many to send to a lab.

Lawyers and paralegals

Months after the opposing party emails a picture, you may need to show what was done to it and when.

HR and background check teams

Screen candidates' ID selfies, certificates and work samples for files to ask about.

Frequently Asked Questions

To detect edited photos, look for several signs, not one. An editor name in the Software field, a save date after the capture date, a camera preview that differs from the frame, a second JPEG save and a zone with its own error level or noise all point to a change. By eye, check that light and shadows agree. A missing signal does not prove the photo is untouched: small edits and a neat paste into a fresh camera shot can slip through.

Often, but not always. Photoshop tends to leave compression tables and its name in metadata, often with XMP editing history. Clean pastes into original camera files are harder to detect: our tests found 3 to 39 of 156, depending on the method. A changed digit on a scanned document was detected in 0 of 40 tests. Photo Forensics is not a document checker.

In Windows, right-click the file, pick Properties and open Details for the camera model, date and a few settings. The free trial of Photo Forensics shows every field, including XMP and maker notes, with search. Online EXIF viewers offer much the same.

Generator traces in metadata, missing camera data and odd proportions are clues. The AI-generation signs scale adds another. A detector's 40% does not mean the image is 40% fake. Treat it as a weak signal and seek other evidence, such as an original file with an embedded camera preview.

Check for frames taken before the loss, far from the stated place or reused from an earlier claim. Edit traces around the damage add weight. The report screens the file; do not deny a claim on that alone. No method detects a staged scene or a real photo of another accident.

Not reliably. A chat assistant describes what it sees and may spot an obvious glitch. Answers can change between attempts, with no hash or log of what was checked.

No. Messengers, social networks and screenshots often strip metadata, so forwarded pictures commonly have empty EXIF. The program labels these files Messenger or Screenshot and suggests asking for the original from the capture device.

Yes. Every detector sometimes flags real photos. Our tests gave about 1 in 10 real photos the AI signal and detected 139 of 196 AI images from five-plus generators. Detection is less reliable for generators released after training.

No. Analysis and the AI model run on your computer. The report states that no file, metadata or location was sent. The program goes online only when you click to open GPS coordinates in a browser map, send a log to support or activate a key.
