Add an archive you made yourself; the search runs on your own computer, so the file never goes to a server. It handles RAR5 whether file names are visible or hidden, and RAR3 only when file names are encrypted. RAR3 archives with visible names are not supported; see the table below.

Removing a lock is not the same as recovering a password

RAR has two generations. Check yours before you buy. The same program also takes 7z and ZIP archives.

RAR5, both modes

RAR5 is the format WinRAR 5 and later write by default, with AES-256 encryption. RAR5 password recovery works whether the file names are hidden or only the data is encrypted.

Older RAR 2.9 to 4.x archives (AES-128) packed with the option that also encrypts file names. Opening the archive shows nothing until you type the password.

What the RAR password recovery software does

Picks the mode on its own

Add a single item with Add files or a whole folder with Add folder. RAR Password Recovery reads the start of each one and sets the matching protection type, so you never choose a mode by hand.

Word list and rules, with GPU

RAR makes every guess expensive on purpose. The search uses a word list plus rules instead of every combination. A graphics card speeds it up a lot; without one, the program drops to the CPU and warns that it is slow.

A hit is proven before you see it

Every option that looks right gets a second check against the encrypted data before it is reported. Wrong guesses are dropped on the way, and a reported password has already worked.

Extracts into a folder

After finding the password, the files are extracted from the RAR into the folder set in the Save to field. Extraction uses the unRAR tool that comes with the program. Without that tool you still get the password, but the extracted copy is not made.

Try candidates until one opens the archive. RAR has no reset or back door, so the password cannot be read from the file. Add your archive to the program and press Recover. It tries a dictionary of words plus rules and tells you when a candidate has been confirmed on your file. Passwords made of words, names and dates can be found.

If you know the password, WinRAR or 7-Zip asks for it when you open the file. Type it in. Without it, the file stays closed. RAR Password Recovery finds the password, and a license extracts the files into a folder you pick.

Look for a hint in the message that came with the file, check your old password notes and password manager, and ask whoever made the archive. Guess a few combinations of the words you usually use. When none of that works, a program is the next step, and it works only on archives you own.

Online services ask you to upload the archive, and the file then sits on someone else's server while they work. Think twice if it holds contracts or scans. The free part is manual: use hints, old notes and the words you usually use. The program has a free trial. You cannot remove the password while it is unknown. Once you have it, the files can be extracted into a folder. The program does not rewrite the .rar. To get an archive without a password, pack that folder again in your archiver and leave the password field empty.

A lock only stops changes to the archive, and the files inside stay readable. When you password protect a RAR file, the content is encrypted, and nothing opens without the password. RAR Password Recovery works on the second case.

The cipher is sound, AES-256 in RAR5 and AES-128 in RAR3, so the password is the only weak point. Every RAR5 guess is also slowed down on purpose, so the number of tries per second is low. A password that is a real word with a date is found. A long random one may not, and we do not promise it. The program also does not run a full pass through every combination on RAR.

The same program takes 7z and ZIP archives. ZIP has its own page for the whole program. For RAR, it handles RAR5 with visible or hidden file names, and RAR3 only when the file names are encrypted. It does not open RAR3 with visible names, self-extracting .exe files or a RAR placed inside a ZIP.
